One of the Algarve’s most iconic natural landmarks, this vast seaside cave is renowned for the hole in its ceiling that lets in streams of sunlight, casting a beautiful glow over the sandstone and beach below. The cave’s interior can only be reached by boat. Several local companies, like Taruga Tours, offer boat trips and rent kayaks and stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) for those who wish to paddle there on their own. Swimming to the cave is not recommended due to strong currents, tides, and heavy boat traffic in the area.

The Sé Cathedral, completed in 1251, blends Renaissance, Gothic, and Baroque styles. Damaged in the 1755 earthquake, it now offers stunning views of the walled town and estuary islands from its tower. Inside, the Museu Capitular houses chalices, priestly vestments, and relics like the forearms of St. Boniface, along with an 18th-century shrine made of bones.

The west coast of the Algarve is completely different from the crowded resorts of the south. Its pristine beaches offer stunning breaks, some over rocks. When the conditions are right, huge waves roll in from the vast Atlantic. The concentration of beaches with varying orientations in a relatively small area makes it easy to find incredible waves, especially if you have your own transportation.

Stretching 60km along the Algarve coastline from west of Faro to Cacela Velha, this expansive system of lagoons and islands covers 18,000 hectares. It includes marshes, salt pans, creeks, and dune islands, providing a vital habitat for migrating and nesting birds. The area is home to a wide range of wading birds, ducks, shorebirds, gulls, and terns. Notably, it serves as a key nesting site for the little tern and the rare purple gallinule. The marshes are a haven for birdwatchers seeking to spot diverse species in this protected environment.

One of the Algarve's most striking churches, this twin-towered Baroque gem was completed in 1719 during the reign of João V. Following the 1755 earthquake, its stunning façade was funded by Brazilian gold, and the interior is lavishly gilded, adorned with countless cherubs. At the back of the church, visitors can enter the 19th-century Capela dos Ossos, a chapel built from the bones and skulls of over 1,000 monks, serving as a poignant reminder of life's transience. It's a truly remarkable and eerie sight.
